You don’t win a ranking once. The bloke one suburb over is adding pages and collecting reviews too, and the order changes when either of you stops. That’s the whole case for maintenance, and it’s why we sell it monthly instead of pretending it’s a one-off job.
Reviews are the part you actually control. In Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, the local search specialists polled ranked high numerical Google ratings the sixth most important factor in the local map pack, with quantity of reviews ninth and recency of reviews eleventh. The factors above them are your category, how close you are to the searcher, and your business name and address — mostly fixed. Reviews are the highest-ranked thing you can go and change this week.
Which means a profile that stopped collecting reviews eighteen months ago slides regardless of how many it has. Recency is its own factor. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found 74% of consumers look for reviews written in the last three months, so it isn’t only the algorithm that notices.
Fourth is not nearly first. Backlinko’s analysis of around four million Google results puts the top organic result at a 27.6% average click-through rate, with the top three taking 54.4% of all clicks, and the first result roughly ten times more likely to be clicked than the tenth. Moving from page two to mid page one isn’t a small win — it’s most of the traffic.
What the monthly work actually is. Google Business Profile posts and upkeep, review generation running after every finished job, a new service-area page each time you take on a suburb, technical checks so nothing breaks quietly, and a one-page plain-English report: calls, direction requests, and the search terms you turned up for.
And the honest part about timing. This is slow. Local rankings move over months, on the back of pages, reviews and time. Anyone promising you first place in 30 days is guessing or lying. If you want the phone ringing this week, that’s ads — the next section.
None of it is secret, either. The whole checklist is written up free in Get Found Locally — do it yourself if you’d rather.
